"What size rug do I need?" is one of the most common questions we hear – and getting it right makes a huge difference. A rug that's too small makes a room look disjointed and the furniture look like it's floating. The right-sized rug pulls a living room, bedroom or dining area together and makes the whole space feel bigger, warmer and more finished.
This rug size guide explains the most common rug sizes in Australia, how big a rug should be for a living room, bedroom, dining room, hallway and kitchen, how to measure your space, and why washable rugs have become the go-to choice for busy Aussie homes.
Common rug sizes in Australia
Rug sizes in Australia are measured in centimetres (width x length). Here are the sizes you'll see most often and where they're typically used:
- 40 x 60cm and 50 x 80cm – door mats, bathroom mats, beside the bed or in front of the kitchen sink.
- 60 x 90cm and 80 x 120cm – small accent rugs for entries, beside a bed or under a reading chair.
- 80 x 160cm and 120 x 160cm – small living areas, kids' rooms, studies and beside a double bed.
- 140 x 200cm – small to medium living rooms and under a queen bed (lower two-thirds).
- 160 x 230cm – the most popular living room rug size in Australia; fits under the front legs of most three-seater sofas.
- Runners: 40 x 120cm, 50 x 150cm and longer – hallways, kitchens and laundries.
- Round rugs: 80cm, 120cm and 140cm diameter – nurseries, reading nooks, under a round dining table or under the Christmas tree.
How to measure for a rug (in 3 steps)
- Measure the area, not the room. Measure the zone the rug needs to anchor – for example, the space the sofa and coffee table take up – rather than wall to wall.
- Leave a border of floor. As a guide, leave around 30–60cm of bare floor between the edge of the rug and the walls in most rooms. In small rooms, 20–30cm still looks great.
- Mark it out. Use painter's tape or sheets of newspaper to mark the rug size on the floor. Walk around it and live with it for a day – it's the easiest way to see whether a size works before you buy.
What size rug for a living room?
The golden rule for living room rugs is that the rug should connect the furniture. There are three popular layouts:
- Front legs on (most popular): the front legs of the sofa and armchairs sit on the rug and the back legs sit on the floor. This usually means a rug around 160 x 230cm for a three-seater sofa. It looks cohesive without needing a huge rug.
- All legs on: every piece of furniture sits completely on the rug. Best for large, open-plan living rooms, and usually needs a rug 200 x 290cm or bigger.
- Coffee table only: a smaller rug sits under the coffee table, with all furniture off it. This works in small apartments, but make sure the rug is at least as wide as the coffee table plus a generous border, or it can look too small.
As a general rule, choose a living room rug that's a little wider than your sofa – roughly 15–20cm wider on each side looks balanced.
Try the Plush Velvet Area Rug (machine washable, 9 colours including tie-dye tones), the Geometric Abstract Area Rug for bold modern style, the Boho Crystal Velvet Area Rug in warm, earthy patterns, or the Vintage Persian Washable Area Rug for a timeless look that's easy to clean.
What size rug for a bedroom?
In the bedroom, the goal is soft flooring where your feet land when you get out of bed.
- Under the bed: position a large rug so it starts just in front of the bedside tables and extends around 45–60cm past each side of the bed and past the foot of the bed. For a queen bed this is usually around 160 x 230cm; for a king, go bigger if you can.
- Beside the bed: two runners or small rugs (for example 60 x 90cm or 80 x 120cm) either side of the bed – great for smaller rooms or if you don't want to move the bed.
- At the foot of the bed: a smaller rug across the end of the bed adds warmth and colour, especially with a bench or ottoman.
For bedrooms, softness counts. The Soft Plush Area Rug, Soft Coral Velvet Area Rug and Soft Flannel Area Rug all feel lovely underfoot, have non-slip backings and are machine washable.
What size rug for a dining room?
Dining rugs need to be big enough that the chairs stay on the rug when they're pulled out – otherwise chair legs catch on the edge every time someone sits down. Measure your table and add around 60cm on every side. For a six-seater table, that usually means a rug at least 160 x 230cm, and often larger. Choose a low-pile, easy-clean rug for under the dining table – flat-weave and washable rugs are ideal because food spills are inevitable.
Hallway runner size guide
A hallway runner should leave a strip of floor visible on both sides – around 10–15cm each side looks best – and stop roughly 15–30cm short of each end of the hallway. Most hallways in Australian homes suit a runner around 60–80cm wide. For kitchens and laundries, a runner along the bench in front of the sink and stove is both practical and comfortable to stand on.
The Moroccan Geometric Runner Rug comes in 40 x 120cm and 50 x 150cm with a non-slip base, and the Gingerbread Christmas Kitchen Runner adds festive fun to the kitchen. For the kitchen sink, absorbent diatomite kitchen mats soak up water and wipe clean.
Round rugs: when and where to use them
Round rugs soften a room full of straight lines. Use one under a round dining table, in a nursery, a reading nook, in front of a fireplace, or under the Christmas tree. The Fluffy Round Shag Rug (80cm to 140cm diameter, 10 colours) is perfect for kids' rooms and nurseries, and the Christmas Round Rug makes a festive tree skirt.
Door mats and bath mats
Don't forget the small rugs that work the hardest. A good entrance mat traps dirt and water before it gets inside – try the Half-Moon Door Mat or Non-Slip Entrance Door Mat. In the bathroom, the Soft Faux Cashmere Bath Mat and Cobblestone Memory Foam Bath Mat are absorbent and non-slip.
Why washable rugs are so popular in Australia
Washable rugs have taken off in Australian homes – and it's easy to see why. Between kids, pets, sand from the beach and red wine at Christmas, rugs get a workout. A washable rug can go straight into the washing machine (check the size suits your machine), so spills and muddy paw prints are no drama.
- Easy to clean: no professional cleaning or carpet shampooing.
- Kid and pet friendly: accidents happen – a washable rug comes back fresh.
- Lightweight and thin: many sit flat enough to open doors over and are easy to move.
- Non-slip backing: grips hard floors like timber, tiles and vinyl plank.
Our machine-washable rugs include the Plush Velvet Area Rug, Vintage Persian Washable Area Rug, Soft Plush Area Rug and Soft Flannel Area Rug.
Choosing rug colours and patterns
- Small rooms: lighter colours and simple patterns make a room feel bigger.
- High-traffic areas: patterned, mid-tone rugs (like vintage Persian or boho designs) hide everyday marks better than plain light colours.
- Neutral rooms: a bold geometric or colourful rug is an easy way to add personality.
- Pull colours from the room: pick one or two colours from your cushions, artwork or curtains and choose a rug that repeats them.
Outdoor rugs
Outdoor rugs make a deck, patio or balcony feel like an extra room. Choose a lightweight, quick-drying rug that can be hosed off and moved easily. The Reversible Outdoor Rug is a woven patio and deck mat in 6 sizes from 40 x 60cm to 120 x 160cm, and it flips over for a second look – handy for camping too.
Rug size FAQ
What is the most common living room rug size in Australia?
160 x 230cm is the most popular living room rug size. It suits most three-seater sofas with the front legs on the rug.
Is it better for a rug to be too big or too small?
If you're unsure, go bigger. A rug that's too small is the most common mistake and makes a room look disconnected.
How do I stop a rug from slipping?
Choose a rug with a non-slip backing, or add a rug underlay. Most of our rugs have a non-slip backing designed for hard floors.
Can you put a washable rug in a normal washing machine?
Smaller washable rugs fit most home machines. Larger rugs may need a commercial-size machine at a laundromat. Always follow the care instructions for your rug.
How do I get creases out of a new rug?
Rugs are folded for shipping. Lay the rug flat and creases usually settle within a few days. Placing heavy books on the creases or reverse-rolling the rug helps them flatten faster.
